Days skied so far....
Tue (12/15) - Our first day out since winter of 1998/1999. The boards felt a bit strange and we were somewhat wobbly. After a few hours of practice we were slowly getting our technique back.
Fri (12/18) - Continued practicing on the bunny slope. After a few warm-up runs we were daring and skied several "real" beginner slopes on Bald Eagle Mtn and Bald Mtn.
Wed (12/23) - Skied the Deer Crest Mtn today. This mountain is serviced by the only gondola in Deer Valley.
Thr (12/24) - Another day of skiing! Slopes getting very busy because of the upcoming Christmas/New Year season.
Fri (12/25) - Even though it was Christmas the slopes were very busy.
12/26 until 1/1 - Our season passes are blacked out during this time period.
Mon (1/4) - Decided to start exploring some new mountains. Deer Valley has a total of 6 mountains to ski. Today we skied Little Baldy Mtn, Bald Mtn, Flagstaff Mtn and Bald Eagle Mtn. We also dared a few intermediate slopes.
Tue (1/5) - Today we skied a new mountain called Lady Morgan. We also skied Flagstaff, Little Baldy and Bald Eagle Mtns. We have one last mountain to ski which is called Empire Mtn.
Thr (1/7) - To add some spice to our skiing we tried a slope with some "easier" moguls. What a mess I made of those!! After the third time down I finally made some sense of them. Scott is still chopping at the moguls but did much better them me.
Tue (1/12) - Did a full mountain transverse today. We went from one end of the resort to the other. We also finally skied Empire Mtn. This mountain has several of the bowls so we were able to ski past them and take a peak. They are expert level and very steep.
Wed (1/13) - Today we did some mogul and glade skiing. We cut through an aspen glade so we could intersect into the lower end of an expert slope where moguls existed. Played in the moguls so we could begin to improve our skill. We have quite a ways to go.
Fri (1/15) - Continued working on mogul skiing techniques. Skied the same glade and slope as we did on 1/13.
Mon (1/18) - Located a new entrance into the glade we were skiing last week. Continued practicing on the moguls. Also skied a new intermediate slope on the way back to the gondola.
Tue (1/19) - Powder skiing has arrived! Received about 8-10 inches of snow on the mountains last night. A very different skiing experience then what we were used too. Slopes had not been groomed so mounds of fresh snow everywhere. Falls were very soft! Also skied our first "expert" black slope today.
Wed (1/20) - Another day of powder skiing. Skied in and out of several aspen glades. Some glades were tiny and others were large. Still working on getting the hang of turning in the powder. Skied the same black slope as yesterday.
Mon (1/25) - A storm this past weekend dumped 2+ feet of snow on the mountains. Skied our loop (Three Ply - Square Deal - Aspen glades) twice and then enhanced our loop to include Star Gazer, Peeler and some new glades. A fun area on Flagstaff Mtn.
Tue (1/26) - A snowy day so we passed through the clouds a few times on our way to the top of the mountains. Lots of powder to be had! Skied a new area on Bald Mtn which included ungroomed slopes and aspen glades. Slopes a bit more steep so turning was a challenge.
Mon (2/1) - Back to skiing after being shutdown a few days with a viral bug (both of us!). A sunny day with lots of powder. Skied the Sunset Bowl/Glade which was a bit more challenging than the glades off the Red Cloud lift. Also skied the open area on top of Little Baldy Peak which ultimately dropped us onto a new slope called Silver Hill.
Tue (2/2) - Explored the Ontario Bowl/Glade area. Quite steep and narrow. Entered from Hidden Treasure slope the first run and then entered from Ontario slope the second run. Ended the day poking around in glades on Little Baldy Peak.
Thr (2/4) - Continued to explore different routes in the Ontario Bowl/Glade area. Snow in direct sun getting a bit heavy but still fluffy in the woods. Also tried a new route through the open area on Bald Mtn. which led us into the Sunset Glade.
Fri (2/5) - Explored the Lady Morgan Bowl on Empire Mtn. The snow on the open face of the bowl was crusty and heavy due to being in direct sun. Plan to try another route to bring us into the woods quicker where snow is softer. Also skied the spine in the Ontario glade and explored routes through the pine tree groves that dropped us out on Hidden Treasure slope.
Mon (2/8) - Skied the Ontario Bowl area. Continued working the spine. Skied down the bowl side once and the glade side twice. Also practiced the moguls under the Red Cloud lift.
Tue (2/9) - Continued to ski the Ontario Bowl area (twice on the spine and once in the bowl). Our technique is slowly improving. Also skied a few times in the aspen glade in the Red Cloud area. Both of us are maneuvering this glade much better! Conditions in the glades continue to be good. Conditions on the groomed intermediate slopes are not that great (freezer burned in many spots). Skied a new slope called "Little Kate".
Thr (2/11) - Mostly skied the Empire Mountain which consists of black expert runs, glades and bowls. Skied an evergreen glade and several new slopes. Also skied the Ontario spine and the Red Cloud aspen glade and moguls.
Fri (2/12) - Skied the Empire Mountain again. This time we skied the Empire Bowl (very steep and tricky) and the Lady Morgan Bowl. Also skied a new aspen glade off of Empire Bowl and the evergreen glade we skied yesterday. Did a quick run on the Ontario spine and I finally skied it without falling!!
Tue (2/16) - Continued to sharpen our mogul skills in the Red Cloud area. Skied both the Ontario spine and the Red Cloud area several times. Also skied Square Deal (black slope) from the very top and did not traverse the slope. Good practice for turning in steep moguls.
Wed (2/17) - Skied the Perseverance Bowl area for the first time. The glades were large and challenging. This area of Bald Mountain has black and double blue slopes only. A challenging area of Deer Valley. Rode the Sultan Express and Wasatch Express lifts for the first time.
Fri (2/19) - Focused on moguls today. Skied the aspen glade and slopes in the Red Cloud area. Also did two runs on the Ontario spine. On the second spine run we went lower on the spine and skied through a nice section of the evergreen glade.
Mon (2/22) - Skied the Empire Peak evergreen glade several times. Scotty located a new entrance into the glade via the Daly route. Nice section for doing turns in and out of the trees. Also, skied the Ontario spine and cut over to the Red Cloud area.
Tue (2/23) - Pretty much skied the same routes as we did yesterday. Also skied Square Deal from the top (black mogul slope). More practice and exposure to this slope is required. Finding lots of powder in the glades!
Thr (2/25) - Several inches of snow fell on the mountains last night. Lots of powder to ski in both the glades and on the "butter" slopes. We skied the Empire glade many times. A very good run which offers lots of turning in the glade. Also skied the Ontario spine and Red Cloud mogul area.
Fri (2/26) - Skied the Empire glade, Ontario spine and Red Cloud mogul areas. Very busy today so we minimized the "butter" slopes as much as possible.
Mon (3/1) - Perfect blue sky and warm temps. Scott even skied in his T-shirt. Snow was soft but still nice in the aspen glade and in the moguls. Strictly practiced our mogul skiing in the Red Cloud area.
Tue (3/2) - Temps in the high 30's/low 40's so snow continuing to soften. Tested taking video but lighting was very flat. Some footage was fine and other will be deleted. Videoed Deer Hollow, aspen glade and Red Cloud area.
Thr (3/4) - Practiced mogul skiing in the Red Cloud area (Three Ply and Square Deal slopes). Snowed the majority of time we skied. A few times it was like a blizzard with minimal visibility.
Fri (3/5) - About 12-14 inches of snow dumped on the slopes last night. A heavier snow than usual but did provide excellent skiing conditions. Able to turn better on steeper slopes due to slower conditions. Skied the Empire glade several times, the Ontario bowl and many runs in the Red Cloud area. Scott and I are continuing to practice the moguls.
Mon (3/8) - Finally checked out the Mayflower area. Mostly black slopes and they were quite steep. Snow conditions not the greatest which added a bit more challenge to the area. Skied the glade area which was nice. Spent the rest of the afternoon practicing our mogul skills.
Tue (3/9) - Only skied the Square Deal slope in the Red Cloud area. The focus today was to practice our mogul skills. The snow conditions are worsening. Very heavy and gloppy.
Thr (3/11) - Skied a new glade in the Bald Eagle Mtn area. Trees were tight and the glade was steep. We then skied the White Owl slope (2002 Olympic aerial competition was held on this slope) which had very nice moguls. The rest of the afternoon was spent practicing mogul skiing in the Red Cloud area. Snow conditions had improved since Tuesday.
Fri (3/12) - Only skied the Red Cloud area to practice our mogul skiing skills. The snow conditions were not that bad considering it was 40 degrees.
Mon (3/15) - Filming for our video started today. Captured shots on the gondola, Deer Hollow, White Owl, glade, some run & gun and several panorama clips.
Tue (3/16) - Filming continued today. Most shots were taken on the Square Deal slope and in the Red Cloud lift area. Trying to capture some mogul skiing.
Wed (3/17) - Back to skiing today. Continued with our mogul practicing but did sneak in a quick run on the Ontario spine. Spring skiing is here! Snow was heavy and slow.
Thr (3/18) - Continued filming today. Focus was on the Empire glade area in addition to filming some butter skiing.
Mon (3/22) - Skied Square Deal many times today. Focused on mogul practicing only. Snow conditions were ho hum. Very soft with lots of mashed potatoes.
Tue (3/23) - Skied the same slope as yesterday to practice the moguls. The temps were colder so the snow conditions were a bit icy.
Thr (3/25) - Continued practicing mogul skiing. Square Deal was quite icy so we altered our entrance to cut out the steep section. Snowed the majority of the time we were skiing. Suppose to snow this evening so let's see what happens.
Fri (3/26) - Snowed the entire time we skied leaving us with about 8" of fresh powder. A nice change from the icy conditions yesterday. Skied the aspen glade off of Square Deal and the Red Cloud area. Great conditions!
Mon (3/29) - Practiced mogul skiing on Square Deal. Snow was soft and slow which was very good for our practice.
Tue (3/30) - Very windy day today. Several chairlifts plus the gondola were shut down due to the wind. DV staff drove us up to the Deer Crest lift so we could access the slopes. Continued practicing mogul skiing in the Red Cloud area. Snow was still soft but starting to freeze in some areas. On the way back at the end of the day we noticed that the Deer Crest lift was shut down. So.... we had to hike up Deer Hollow slope so we could ski down Jordanelle to get to the van. Half way up Deer Hollow we were picked up by a snowmobile. A different twist to the day!
Wed (3/31) - Snowed very heavy the entire day. At least 14 to 15 inches had fallen and more was coming. Skied the Empire glade once since the Empire Express was shutdown right after we reached the summit. Very windy with blizzard conditions. Skied the Red Cloud area, Ontario spine and aspen glade which had tons of powder.
Thr (4/1) - Strictly skied the Red Cloud area today. Continued with our mogul skiing practice.
Fri (4/2) - Skied the aspen glade several times in the Red Cloud area. We wanted to cut off the top portion of Square Deal since it was a bit fast. Once exiting the aspen glade we continued with our mogul skiing practice.
Mon (4/5) - Snowed very heavy the entire day. At least 20+ inches had fallen and more was coming. Skied part of the Empire glade since the entrance was closed due to avalanche conditions. Very windy with blizzard conditions. Went back to the Red Cloud area and skied Square Deal, Ontario spine and aspen glade which had tons of powder.
Tue (4/6) - Snow tapered off and sun started to come out. Ski conditions were the best ever! Skied the Ontario Bowl, a few new glade areas and Square Deal. Scotty and I finally skied Square Deal doing turns from the top to the bottom.
Wed (4/7) - Perfect blue sky day and snow conditions were great. Scotty and I tested the wider Rossignol skies. They skied very nicely. We tested them in the Empire glade several times. Then went back over to the Red Cloud area for a few more runs to include the Ontario spine.
Thr (4/8) - Another blue sky day with warmer temps. Skied a variety of trails to include Star Gazer, Blue Bell, Jordanelle, Square Deal and the aspen glade. We're both skiing much better! Snow beginning to soften again.
Fri (4/9) - Last day of skiing at Deer Valley. Very sad but fortunately we're planning on returning for the 2010/2011 season. Tried our new skies today in the aspen glade, on butter and in the moguls. They worked well for both of us. Conditions not quite as good as yesterday. Snow was soft and beginning to get slushy.
Both Scott and I had a great ski season. We definitely moved forward in becoming better skiers but with plenty of room to grow. Looking forward to hitting the slopes in Dec 2010.
Be safe and enjoy!
