I suddenly thought of something worth mentioning. Although the main reason I am living like this is that I enjoy it, a strong secondary reason is the cost of rent and real estate in Calgary. Calgary has a very strong economy. It is Canada's "white collar" oil city. Edmonton (185 miles north) is Canada's "blue collar" oil city as it is closer to Fort Mcmurray and the oil sands. Jobs in Calgary generally pay very well compared to other cities but the cost of living is much higher as well. If I had the inclination to live in the city a very average one bedroom apartment would cost about 1200-1500 a month to rent. A basement suite would be at least 700-1000. The average house price in Calgary is currently 517,000. I believe we are in a real estate bubble. Actually I think Canada has a real estate bubble in all of it's major cities. Anyways, it is very cheap for me to live out here and, now that this wood stove is in place and heating my coach, it's going to be even cheaper.
